ROYAL BOXING CLUB

The Royal Boxing Club was formed in late 1985 by an enthusiastic band former Royal College boxers. They felt that the Club will be an asset to Royal College boxers. In addition it would also assist Old Royalists desirous of competing in national meets after leaving school.

The promoters of the Club were Mr.Gamini Salgodo,Maj.Gen. C.H.Fernando,Mr Upali Ratnayake,Mr Dhulambe Sirimanne,Col.Faiz ur Rahman,Mr Themiya Gunasekara,Mr Metha Abeygunawardena, Maj.Shaul Mohamed,Cmdr Edward De Silva,Mr Lakshman Ranasinghe,late Mr.Sumeda Perera,Mr Priyantha Malavi,Mr Troy Arunachalam,Mr Riaz Nadheem,Mr Ikraam Ousman,Mr Allam Ousman,Mr Athula Dassanayake,Mr Malika Thilakaratne,and Mr.Milroy Ganeshan.

Blessings for the formation of the club was given by the obeysekara brothers,Danton,Fredrick,and Alex,and Mr.Barney Henricus.

A constitution was drawn up and the primary object of the club was to promote Boxing and physical Training among students and old boys of Royal College. 



To celebrate the inauguration of the Royal Boxing Club as well as the 150th Anniversary of Royal College, an inaugural Dual Boxing Meet was held on 1st March 1986.The Royal Boxing Club President’s team for Trophy presented by M/s Capitol Communication Systems Ltd, at the Royal College Hall. The chief guest was the Minister of Sports, the Hon.Vincent Perera M.P. The Trophy was won by the Royal Boxing Club Team. A souvenir was published to mark the occasion.

The Royal College boys as well as old boys have represented the Club at meets conducted by the ABA of Sri Lanka. The Club has been able to provide assistance to the school by way of funds and equipment. A donation of boxing gloves and head guards was received in 1993 from the Old Boys Association in Australia through the efforts of Mr.Eddie Gray.

We regret to note the deaths of two of our office bearers, Mr.S.S.J.Perera in 1987 and 1987 and Mr Danton G.Obeysekara in 1993.
